Marat Grigorian is the new lightweight champion of the world!
Tonight Marat Grigorian had to fight Sitthichai Sitsonpeenong for the belt for the third time. Third time is a charm, he did it!
Marat ‘The Armenian Devil’ Grigorian (60-11-1, 35 KO’s) was the #1 lightweight in the glory ranking and had to fight against defending champion Sitthichai ‘The Killer Kid’ Sitsongpeenong (122-30-5, 32). The last 2 times they stood head to head Sitthichai won both fights by split decision.
They had to fight five championship rounds of three minutes. Marat's strengths are ring control, volume & combos and left kick counters. Sitthichai's strengths are control range & pace, southpaw kicks & knees and improved boxing.
Marat started of the first round good with high kicks. He keeps pressure and makes good combinations. Sitthichai has gotten better at boxing, he used to fight more with kicks. But marat is more aggressive and he wins the first round according 3 of the 5 judges. The second round Marat keeps the pressure and knocks down Sitthichai with a left hook with 30seconds left on the clock. Marat wins this round unanimously. In the third round Sitthichai gives a couple of good strikes and tries to put some pressure on Grigorian. Both men are good technical fighters. But Marat fights more aggressive and makes it hard for Sitthichai. He also wins this round according to 4 of the 5 judges. In round 4 Sitthichai has to fight more aggressive. But Marat keeps putting pressure on him. He wins the this round according to 3 of the 5 judges. The last final round Sitthichai needs to make a knock out to defeat Grigorian. He tries a few flying knees, but isn't successful.
Grigorian was the better fighter, he fought more aggressive, kept the pressure and made lots of combinations.
